As the Tesla part in the name of this supercar says - it's an electric car. Actually, Tesla Roadster is the first electric car which is capable of traveling 245 miles (393 km) on batteries alone with a single charge, and it is worth mentioning, that lithium-ion battery is the only power supply for this future car. Although, future car is not the best description here, as Tesla Roadster is on production from February 2008, but it still fits this supercar very nicely as more and more cars are going green - and that is the future of automotive industry. Supercar? Oh yes! On October 27, 2009 Tesla Roadster set the new world record - it traveled an astonishing 311 miles (501 km) with a single charge. Now, how much can you travel with your car with a full tank of petrol?
Development and production
Tesla Roadster electric car is based on Lotus Elise, another supercar from British sports car maker Lotus. They share roughly 6% of parts, including air bags, windshield, suspension components, some front panel parts etc. The monocoque chassis is build by Lotus exclusively for Tesla Roadster, and the body is hand-made of carbon fiber. In 2010 Tesla introduced Tesla Roadster 2.5 which had several improvements compared to the older one: new seats with better support, improved sound reduction, hardware to keep driving exciting in very hot climates and some others.
As Tesla Roadster is an electric supercar, not like petrol cars it requires much less service - recommendation is to bring this car of the future for maintenance service every year or every 12,000 miles, but considering that you will not have to change oil, belts, there is no exhaust system etc. service fees shouldn't be very high. And in case of emergency then something urgent happens on the road you can call a mobile Tesla service, but be prepared to pay $1 for each mile this mobile unit will have to travel in addition to the repair fee.
Specifications
375 volt AC induction air-cooled electric motor with variable frequency drive producing 288 hp (215 kW) at 5,000 - 6,000 rpm and a torque of 273 lb/ft (370 Nm) at 0-5,400 rpm is the heart of Tesla Roadster supercar. There's even a Tesla Roadtser Sport version with a slightly higher torque. Did you knew, that this engine has a maximum rpm of astonishing 14,000 and a single fixed speed gear only? Who said Honda's engines loved high rmps? Future car Tesla Roadster can reach a maximum speed of 125 mhp (201 kmh) and Tesla claims, that battery should not cause you any trouble for about 7 years or 100,000 miles. As mentioned above it can travel about 245 miles with a single charge and it has a heater for cold weather charging to -20 degrees Celsius.
